My dearest Katherine,

How time flies, it seems like yesterday that I was writing my first letter to you. But now, you are three years old! Hooray!

2018-LettertoKatie-1

This past Thursday (your actual birthday), we went out for dinner in the city, at our favourite Thai place. You ate noodles (still your favourite). Once we got home, you blew your candles and we ate cake (always a favourite). Then you opened your present. We got you your own wooden guitar, which we know you absolutely love!

Our family celebration

Yesterday, your Dad and I went to childcare and brought a big rainbow cake, for you to share with your classmates at afternoon tea. All your friends and teachers loved the cake! Your friends made you a special crown to wear for the day, you wore it until we got home.

Oh my dear Katie, you are such a big girl now. Sometimes, I look at you and I look for it—the chubby cheeks, the fat rolls in your arms, your tummy—those things you had when you were a baby. They are gone. In place is a lovely lovely face, lean and long arms and legs, the makings of a very pretty little girl. Sometimes, I feel sad for losing that baby, but only for a moment.

Where did my baby go?

You have warmed up to your role as big sister to Patty. These days, you don’t mind when Patty sits beside you and plays with you. When Patty grabs a toy out of your hand, you don’t fight her and just let her have it. Such a patient and generous girl!

This past year, your teachers told us they have a few concerns about your development. We are working through these right now, and I’m positive that you’ll overcome them soon enough. We’ll help you—Daddy, me and even Patty.

Although you don’t say many words as yet, you know how to express yourself in other ways. A gesture, even making noises and holding my hands—somehow, you communicate what you need to and you almost always get what you want. Your teachers say that you still love music, and these days, you are more into physical activities—dancing, climbing walls, sliding. I hope you continue to thrive, my love.

This coming year, we’ll continue to work on your challenges. I’m confident we will get through them with flying colors. But you know what, my love, you just continue being yourself. We will always love you no matter what.

Love,

Mummy
