I had to read the headline thrice, and even then I was hesitant to click and read the entire article. But it was CNN, and for sure it’s not fake news. Anthony Bourdain, dead at 61.

Like so many others around the world, I didn’t know him personally. But I do know his work, in the many episodes of his TV shows. I know his words, in the books he’s written, in the articles written about him. Like so many others, I was inspired by his travels. He had a way with words that made places, people and even food come to life in my mind.

There was a time in my life when all I wanted was to get out there and see the world. I’ve watched countless episodes of “No Reservations” and thought “this is how to travel”.

Foregoing the usual hotels and the tourist traps, and instead meeting the locals, seeing how they live. Learning a city’s history not by what the travel books say, but what the people there know. Looking for the secret,out-of the way dining places and in the process, understanding what makes the place unique, and showcasing that to the world. That’s what Tony did.

I’ve tried to do the same when I travelled. But there are some conveniences I cannot give up (a hotel room with my own shower), and I still go to the popular spots. But that curiosity to learn more, seek the unfamiliar and sometimes uncomfortable- that’s inspired by Anthony Bourdain.

If you’ve watched any of his shows or read any of his books, you’ll know why his loss today has such a big impact. Because he had a way with words that made a place, and even food come to life. It was nothing short of magical (at least for me).

Some episodes of his show, “Parts Unknown” is currently showing on Netflix. A part of me wants to watch, but not now, maybe in the next few months. Because I know once I watch the final episode, it will be like saying goodbye to an old friend. Not now. Not yet.

Goodbye, Mr. Bourdain! You have affected and inspired a lot of people in the world. I hope you find your peace.
