I have fond memories of eating chocolate crinkles. It was one of my favourite afternoon snacks in high school. I remember going to the school cafeteria after classes, buying a pack of chocolate crinkles from one of the food stalls, and just hanging out with my friends.

Chocolate Crinkles
Perfect for afternoon tea!

It wasn’t until when I was writing this that I realized I didn’t even get to eat chocolate crinkles when I was in Singapore. I don’t think I saw a store selling it over there. It’s the same here in New Zealand. Is it a Filipino recipe? I’m not so sure.

But anyway, I tried baking chocolate crinkles late last year, when I had some extra cocoa powder for making champorado and hot chocolate. I was thinking what else to use cocoa powder on, when I recall watching a Youtube video about chocolate crinkles.

I’m definitely not a baker, but I will attempt to make something once, just to try. But for chocolate crinkles, I’ve made it several times in the past few months. While Katie likes the chocolate cookies that I make for them at least once a week, Patty prefers chocolate crinkles. She calls them “sugar”, because she once pointed at the white powder, and I told her it was sugar.

Here is a recipe for chocolate crinkles that I hope you try. It’s very simple, and is a great snack that everyone will like. It’s also a great gift, if you prefer giving edible goods to your family and friends.

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1/4 tsp salt

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup cocoa (unsweetened)

1 cup white sugar

2 medium eggs

1/4 cup oil (I use canola)

1 tsp vanilla

Method:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 170 Celcius
  2. In a bowl, mix cocoa, sugar, eggs, oil and vanilla.

5. Chill for 1 hour or longer in the fridge (so that it’s easier to hold and roll)

6. Scoop at least a teaspoon of the mixture, form a ball and roll into icing sugar.

7. Place into a flat tray lined with baking powder. This makes about 2 dozen crinkles.

So yum!

These chocolate crinkles usually keep for at least a week, but since it’s so good, we usually finish it in just a few days. Sometimes, I do a double batch and make more to share with our friends here in Wellington.

I hope you try this recipe for chocolate crinkles. They are perfect for snacking and can be quite addictive. You’ll probably eat more than one!
