Last week, I mentioned that I’ve been going through the Korean drama catalogue on Netflix. When I’ve finished a K-drama, I sometimes browse through the rest of the movies and shows, and watch something different.

Here’s a few that I enjoyed and found interesting:

Street Food

I watched this series because it was showing up on my Facebook feed, and there was some brouhaha about an article criticizing the episode on Cebu street food as “poverty porn”. Naturally, that particular episode was the first one I watched, and I wasn’t bothered by it all, so I don’t know what that article was saying. I just got really hungry looking at the food–lechon, chinese spring roll, rice. Oh, how I miss those in Cebu.

The Korean episode got me excited about the trip I’m planning this December, while the Singapore episode had me in tears (seriously!), just because those foods were my staples when we lived in Singapore. The Osaka episode piqued my curiosity for Japan, and I really liked the story of the vendor who owned the Izakaya stall.

When you watch it, you actually get an understanding that although most of the street food vendors start their ventures out of necessity, they are also quite passionate about how they make their dishes. So you get a new appreciation of the street foods that you try in different places.

Get Out

This movie won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay last year, and was a big hit in the box office. I wanted to watch this on the big screen, but as you know, it’s hard for me and JP to take the day off to watch movies, just the two of us. Good thing that this is on Netflix, and I finally got to appease my curiousity.

I liked the suspense of the movie, and the creepy mood it had from the beginning of the film, when the lead character arrives in his girlfriend’s house and meets her parents. I wasn’t quite sure what the twist was, and it kept me guessing until the later part. There were a few funny scenes, and at times, it bordered on campy, but it delivered in terms of storytelling and thrills. I think it deserves the Oscar.

Isn’t It Romantic

I’ve been a fan of Rebel Wilson ever since I watched her in “Bridesmaids”. This movie is perfect for her, and plus points for re-uniting her with Adam Devine. Liam Hemsworth is gorgeous, and so is Priyanka Chopra. It’s a light and funny movie about loving yourself, and not being too jaded about romance. I just cringed at some of the musical numbers, but overall it was just a fun movie.

The Crown

Watched the first season when I was still full time at home with Patty, and I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling, the costumes and the characters. If you think about it, the Queen has lived through almost all of the significant events of the 20th century, and you have to applaud her for being able to sustain her reign, despite so many challenges.

I finished the second season too, and I loved being able to see the issues faced by the royal family, particularly Prince Phillip and Princess Anne (she has the prettiest outfits!).

I’m looking forward to watching Season Three, which will tackle the Diana years. Something to be excited about in the next few months!

Wine Country

I will watch anything with Tina Fey, Amy Pohler and Maya Rudolph in it. I am such a fan of their comedy, and just find them hilarious.

This movie was funny, and I’m sure most women with long-time girl friends can relate to the things this group did here. Plus points for the cool 80s and 90s music–I really enjoyed this one.

I’ve still got more on my “To Watch” list, and slowly getting through them all. It’s going to take some time, what with the K-dramas I’ve been watching. I really like the time we live in, don’t you? We have a whole lot of viewing options these days. Sometimes, I get overwhelmed by all these movies and series that are put out for us. So many of them, but so little time!
