Someday, I will look back at 2020 as the year that I baked. This pandemic and the lockdown period have certainly helped my baking skills to level up. I can honestly say that with all the baking I’ve done these past couple of weeks, I’m a bit more confident facing off with our oven. If you’re like me, and still building up on baking skills, this cheese scone recipe is for you.

Scones are a favorite baked good here in New Zealand. Similiar to the Philippines’ pan de sal, you can have it at any time of the day. It’s best eaten with coffee or tea. Scones can be sweet or savory, eaten by itself or with a dollop of butter or cream. The best thing about scones is that they are so easy to make. If you’re a first-time baker, scones are the perfect things to try.

This cheese scones recipe is very basic, so you should have no problem looking for the ingredients in your pantry. Let’s get to it!

Cheese Scones: Ingredients

2 cups all purpose flour

2 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. sugar

1/2 tsp. salt

2 cups cheese (regular Cheddar or Tasty cheese)

1 cup milk

1 tsp paprika (optional)

  1. Pre-heat oven to 220°C.
  2. Lightly grease a baking tray or line tray with baking paper.
  3. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.
  4. Add cheese and milk.
  5. Using a simple table/bread knife, mix well. The mixture will be dense and a bit heavy.
  6. Scoop about 2 tbsps of the mixture onto the baking tray.
  7. Place tray in oven and bake for 15 minutes or until well risen and golden.

When the scones are out of the oven, control yourself and wait a few minutes for these goodies to cool down. Then spread some butter and sip your coffee or tea. It’s really a great snack any time of the day.
