Confession time, guys. We don’t have cable at home. When we first got here, it was one of those things I missed from when we were living in Singapore and the Philippines. I’m a TV-addict, seriously. I like channel surfing–watching anything that I come across. But things change when you have a baby (turning to a toddler). Seems that your TV is always tuned to YouTube, playing an endless stream of Sesame Street, Little Baby Bum and Mother Goose Club videos.
The only time I get to watch any age-appropriate TV shows properly is when Katie is at daycare, or at night when she’s sleeping. Or around dinnertime, when JP comes home, we watch the local news, and any other show that follows after that. We got Netflix a few months ago, and I also watch online from a streaming site. Here are my current favorite TV shows.
House of Cards
This series stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright as an ambitious couple in Washington with plans to take the White House. It gives us an inside look at politics and how corruption and manipulation actually plays a big part in running the government. It starts off a bit slow, but you’ll get drawn into the story soon enough. I’m just fascinated with all the back-deals, and how far politicians go to push their agenda.
Scandal
I watched about two seasons of this show when I was pregnant with Katie, and I’m trying to catch up on the latest these past few days. It starts out as Kerry Washington playing a powerful PR consultant in a relationship with the President, but as you watch more episodes, you’ll find that there’s a lot more to the story.Honestly, there was a point when I got tired of the Olivia-Grant on/off relationship, so it’s nice that they eventually tackled other topics and presented more intrigue and twists.
How to Get Away with Murder
It stars Viola Davis, which is enough reason to watch the show. She plays a law professor, who along with her students get involved in a murder plot. Once, long ago, I wanted to be a lawyer–and if I were to become one now, Viola’s character would probably be a role model — smart, powerful,confident. She does have her weaknesses and battles her demons too, but somehow, she manages to get herself, her clients and her students out of messy situations.
This is Us
If there is one show that’s guaranteed to make you laugh and cry at the same time, it’s this one! I love this show because the story is compelling, and the way the story is told is interesting. It jumps back and forth from the present day to the past, so that we get an idea how the characters were when they were younger, and how the parents decisions affected their kids. As both a a parent and a child, I can relate to the issues the family encountered in raising the family, and how it impacted their kids when they grew up. The ensemble cast led by Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia is great together, and the soundtrack doesn’t hurt either. I probably should have avoided this, because tears–lots of tears went down. Emotions. Hormones. Whatever.
So those are my four current favorite TV shows. I like watching them so I can rejoin the adult world. By the way, I’ve watched about three seasons of Game of Thrones, but I can’t seem to be interested enough in it to watch consistently (is that a bad thing?). When I finish with these four, maybe I’ll try watching again.
