Today’s a holiday. We get to spend a few more hours in bed. The reason: it’s Singapore’s 41st birthday. yey!
There’s this whole celebration going on throughout the island, with fireworks and a parade. So, as a birthday gift to Singapore, let me list down the things I like about living here:
Efficient bus and MRT system
It’s true what people say: you can get to any point in Singapore within 30 minutes. Totoo yan. Well, except if you’re like going from Choa Chu Kang to Expo using the MRT (takes about an hour or so), but this theory almost always proves true. The buses and trains run like clockwork, you just have to know the schedule. And let me tell you that the bus drivers are really disciplined. They literally stop at the bus stop, nowhere else.
I love the fact that it is so convenient to borrow books. I can reserve online too! They also have a really extensive collection, and it’s so modern: I just use my library card, scan my books in the machine (like in the grocery). No more messy stamps from the librarian. Returning books is just a matter of dropping it off in their designated bins. So convenient!
You will not run out of choices for affordable and good food. Everywhere I turn, there’s bound to be a hawker center.
ECP (East Coast Park) and other public parks
I can ride my bike going to the park without worrying I’ll get hit by a speeding car. You’ll fell healthy when you ride along with other park visitors. You can also rent one of their tables and have a cookout with friends. Again, reservation is online!
It’s not just Orchard Road. There are a lot of small areas where you can find good buys (read: cheap and of good quality).
Trees, trees everywhere! It’s not called the Garden City for nothing. Even highways are tree-lined. Good for the health, good for the environment.
These are just some of the things I’ve come to like about living in Singapore. Of course, this is only my first year here. I’m looking forward to discovering more about this city.
